LANZAROTE EXTENSION 2024 PROGRAMME

FRIDAY OCT 25 // 20:00 h

WE SHALL MEET IN THE PLACE WHERE THERE IS NO DARKNESS (12’)

KassKassel, Germany

Created by > Selene Martello & Dario Wilmington

Performed by > Dario Wilmington & Iris Posthumus

Music > Margaret Noble “Frakture” (Rework by Dario Wilmington)

“You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct— in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every moment scrutinized’. The duet is inspired by the dystopian novel ‘1984’ by George Orwell and the surrealistic paintings of Rene Magritte. The dancers are part of an, at appearance, utopian society, in which people’s lives are constantly monitored and unwillingly manipulated. A civilization in which human beings enact a life in order to fulfil a script. It’s a play of knowing and unknowing reality, a ‘game’ of lying to loved ones and hiding huge secrets. ‘If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever’. They can make you say anything, but they can’t make you believe it. They can’t get inside you. The main topics are freedom, manipulation, lying, control of the information, rebellion, solidarity, respect, selfishness and betrayal. All topics that are for us very relevant and a big part of our current society. It’s not so much staying alive, it’s staying human. That’s important. What counts is that we don’t betray each other”.

TENGO QUE (10’)

Mitry-Mory, France

Created & Performed by > Clémence Juglet

Music > Leon Afterbeat “ Tuesday”, “Wednesday”

“Time is no longer just an instrument of evaluation, the measure of excellence. It obsesses us, terrifies us, makes us feel guilty and provokes a sense of urgency. There is only one objective: to make the most of this time, always and still, until we obtain satisfaction, and then, hungry for the best, we repeat this scheme indefinitely. We are trapped in a race against the clock, in which we exhaust ourselves by supplying more and more energy. We give body and soul to work. We keep wanting to master time, to control it, but this is only illusory. We have to maintain an idealised self-image, to the point of ignoring our own value and wealth in favour of work”.

DEAD MOUSE (13’)

Limassol, Cyprus

Created by > Milena Ugren Koulas

Performed by > Theo Samsworth & Christopher Mills

Original Music > George Koulas & Dafni Koulas

“In extremelife-threatening situations, if fighting or fleeing is impossible, the last biological and instinctual survival strategy is a complete collapse of muscles and energy, or immobility and paralysis known as ‘playing dead’. This biological and instinctual response reduces the fear and pain to limit the suffering, or if the opportunity occurs, creates the capability to fight or flee. In the case of survival, there are different factors and actions that can help prevent post-traumatic stress disorder and help develop resilience. One of them is love and proper support from another person. The choreographic work Dead Mouse belongs to much larger research on trauma and resilience that the choreographer has been conducting for the last five years together with dancers she collaborates with, as well as with the Stylish Junkies team”.

THIS WOMAN (11’45”)

Wenzhou City, China

Created & Performed by > Shuchang Chen

Music > Alva Noto “Un Día”, Guo Sida “So gentle and crazy”

“East Asian women carry discipline throughout their lives, and when you look, you see endless exploitation and restraint. But when life weighs you down and you can’t breathe, you will find an outlet on your own to accept yourself and carry yourself”.

SIMPOSIO (13’)

Monfalcone, Italy

Created & Performed by > Lia Claudia Latini & Giovanni Leonarduzzi

Music > Sigur Ros “Hvert Stefnir”

“From Plato’s story to the present day, a continuous tension in search of the total, unique, complete body. From the ‘hermaphrodites’ narrated in Aristophanes’ speech, supernatural figures, in strength and shape, to the divided body that we have. The attempt at reunion, the tension towards completeness, the relationship never completely ‘satisfied’ because it is now impossible to go back to being a ‘unique body’. A perennial desire for reunion, a desire that animates and moves bodies”.
