Laura Kumin trained as a dancer and teacher in the United States and is now based in Spain. She was dance advisor to the Madrid Regional Government from 1989-1995 and head of dance programming at the Teatro Pradillo from 1997-2011. Since 1987 she has directed the Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid (Madrid Choreographic Contest), the main platform in Spain for new contemporary dance creators.
Through Paso a 2 Plataforma Coreográfica Asociación Cultural she has participated in the European projects ChoreoRoam Europe and Performing Gender, Performing Gender: Dance Makes Differences and currently Performing Gender: Dancing in Your Shoes 2020-23. She is a founding partner of the European network Aerowaves. She works extensively as a creative catalyst, outsider, mentor, teacher, programmer and journalist.
Laura holds a BA in Spanish literature and philology from New York University. She holds a Master’s degree in cultural management from ICCMU, Universidad Complutense de Madrid and completed an internship at the National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, DC. She is a member of the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts.
