PIA KRĂ„MER (President of the Jury)

Pia Kräemer was born in Nabburg, Germany and finished her studies in Dance and Psychology with a Master Degree at the University of Regensburg. As a student, she found her first Dance and Performance Space, “Loft”, an old soap factory in the city of Regensburg, where she worked as a dance teacher and choreographer and organiser of international workshops. In 1990 she went to New York to study again Contemporary Dance, Dance Movement Therapy and Contact Improvisation. Back to Germany she worked as Dance Movement Therapist at Loew, a private Institue for mentally and physically disabled people. In  2000 she moved to Portugal were she was teaching Master Classes in Dance Movement Therapy at several Universities. At the same time she started  the community and educational work at O Espaço do Tempo,  Montmor-o-Novo, a 16th century monastery, transformed in a residence and production space. Since 2012 she is assisting Rui Horta, the Artistic Director. She is responsible for the international residences, the coordination of the Portuguese Platform of the Performing Arts and the collaboration with international partners and networks. She is the Portuguese partner for Aerowaves.


Ofra Idel received her Master’s Degree in Dance and Dance Education from the Rubin Dance and Music Academy in Jerusalem.  She has danced at the Kolben D.C and the Tami D.C/Nimrod Freed and has performed in the USA, India, China, Senegal, Japan, Chile and around Europe. In 2005, Idel was invited by the Alexandria Performing Arts Association to create for the BosmaDance Company, Washington D.C. Since then her work has been showcased in Israel and abroad. Her stage performances focus on social issues and investigate the complexities of human dynamics. Idel is the Co-Founder & Artistic Director of the Machol Shalem Dance house in Jerusalem developing outreach programs as well as International projects and professional platforms.



Karen Cheung holds a Master’s Degree in Cultural Studies from Maastricht University, The Netherlands. She worked at the Guangdong Modern Dance Company as Company Manager and Administrative Director from 2004 to 2011. As the producer of different dance projects, she has successfully turned Guangdong Modern Dance Company theatre into the most active home base for contemporary dance in the region. In 2011, she was appointed Director of the Guangdong Dance Festival as well as Program Director of the Beijing Dance Festival. In the following year, Cheung successfully curated the first Beijing Dance Festival and brought Guangdong Dance Festival to a whole new level. In 2012, she initiated DanceX, creating a meeting place for Chinese contemporary dance and the international scene. In 2013, she curated the community project, focusing on the relationship of arts and the public. In 2015, she started the Delta Moves project to promote the contemporary dance of the Pearl River Delta region. In 2017, Cheung was appointed Head of China Dance Development Program by City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) in Hong Kong. She is also one of the key driving forces of HOTPOT – East Asia Dance Platform, which is a new festival network formed between Seoul International Dance Festival (Korea), Yokohama Dance Collection (Japan) and City Contemporary Dance Festival (China), in collaboration with ICEHOT – Nordic Dance Platform. HOTPOT aims to bring international attention to the Asian contemporary dance scene and to promote exchange and collaboration within the region. The first HOTPOT will launch at the City Contemporary Dance Festival in Hong Kong in 2017.


Founder and Artistic Director of T.H.E Dance Company and the M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival, Kuik Swee Boon was born in South Malaysia, Batu Pahat, and is currently based in Singapore. He was the first Asian principal male dancer with Spain’s Compañia Nacional de Danza (CND) from 2002 to 2007. During his career with the CND, he worked mainly with Nacho Duato as well as renowned choreographers including Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin and Wim Vandekeybus. Prior to joining the CND, he began his dance career in 1990 with the Singapore People’s Association Dance Company and Singapore Dance Theatre. For his exceptional artistry, Swee Boon was nomintated in 2003 for the Benois De La Danse Award. In 2007, he was awarded the Young Artist Award from the National Arts Council of Singapore (NAC). He founded T.H.E Dance Company in September 2008.


Graduated from the Faculty of Theatre Knowledge in 1979 and from the Theatre Direction Faculty where received a Master degree in 1983. For seven years was connected with theatres in Warsaw and Cracow as a theatre director, one year as literary director in the theater in Koszalin, then leading an off-theater in Germany, directing Contemporary Scene in Stara Prochownia Theater in Warsaw.

In 1987 worked by ballet “Insatiability” by Polish dramatist Witkacy for Polish National Opera and in 1988 “Only once in life” – the story of Isadora Duncan. Since the establishment of the Zawirowania Dance Theatre wrote most of its screenplays: “Hug me”, “Kill, if you love”, “Into the light… Blindfolded”, “Nothing but the Blue”, “Innocent when you dream” and recently “Closeness”.

The Zawirowania Dance Theatre was established in 2004 under the Foundation’s auspices and in couple of years it became one of the most recognizable groups of dance theatre in Poland. In the role of manager and producer he directs premieres, organizes performances and international projects.  From the beginning the artistic director of the Theater is Ms. Elwira Piorun, who used to be a soloist of the Polish National Ballet. Except her, the dancers are also: Elwira Piorun, Karolina Kroczak, Bartosz Figurski, Szymon Osiński. From its establishment, the Zawirowania Dance Theatre was involved in cultural activity in Poland, but also performed at many festivals throughout the World, from Eastern Europe, by Asia and Africa, to North and South America. He is also the organizer of Zawirowania Dance Theatre Festival in Warsaw.

Participant of various activities leaded by the Forum of Social Dialogue, former chairman of the Commission for the Theater and member of the presidium of the committee, also was a  chairman of the Commission for the Dance.
